COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED TO BRIGHTEST 4-H HORSE PROGRAM YOUTH AT
NATIONAL COMPETITION
Louisville, KY (November 10, 2002) –
Nearly 350 of the nation’s brightest equine enthusiasts from 28 states
competed in the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup as part of the North
American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) held in Louisville,
Ky. The Eastern Roundup is one of the final educational competitions for
senior 4-H contestants earning champion status at their state 4-H horse
contests.
Contestants
compete in one of six contests at the Eastern Roundup: horse judging;
Horse Bowl, which is similar to quiz bowl or Quick Recall, but asks only
horse related questions; communications contests including public
speaking, individual demonstration and team demonstration; and Hippology,
a comprehensive contest that tests contestants’ knowledge and skills of
the horse world.
The individual
champions of each 2002 Eastern Roundup contest received a $500 scholarship
awarded by the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA), a major Eastern
Roundup’s financial contributor. Trophies were also awarded from NAILE
and a number of other generous sponsors.
“This event
could not be possible if were not for our sponsors,” remarked Ashley
Griffin, 2002 volunteer manager of the Eastern Roundup. “With the
financial support from NAILE, the equine industry and other contributors
we are able to provide this contest at a premier location and reward the
diligent efforts of these outstanding 4-H members.”
Griffin went
on the say that the combined contests do more than just provide an arena
of competition.
“Roundup and
the 4-H horse program have such positive educational impacts on our
kids,” she said. “Contestants have commented that their experiences
help them in the development of life skills such as team work,
communication, cognitive thinking and decision making skills.
During the
awards program, Liz Rogers, youth programs manager for AQHA remarked that
she was so glad to be a part of such a prestigious program and that her
organization had the opportunity to recognize all the hard work and
efforts of the contestants.
“The level
of the contestants’ knowledge, confidence and motivation was
unbelievable,” said Rogers. “4-H is one of the leaders of developing
youth into responsible horse people, and this is very important for the
stewardship of the horse industry.”
